Bye-Bye, Red Dye
On January 15, U.S. regulators banned one type of red dye, Red No. 3, from foods. It was already banned from cosmetics. But that ban wasn’t extended to foods until now, 35 years later.
In 2022, health advocates petitioned the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). They cited studies showing that the dye caused health problems in rats. This may not be true for people. But the FDA is giving manufacturers until January 2027 to remove the dye from products.
