In this mission, you’ll tell us what job you might like to have in the future. Don’t worry, we won’t be upset if you don’t pick “journalist” (though we suspect some of you will!).

Mission 7: What's Your Dream Job?

“What do you want to be when you grow up?” You’ve probably heard this a million times. Maybe your answer has changed as you’ve gotten older. Or maybe you’ve known since you were little what you were destined to do. When you think about your future career, consider your skills, interests, and passions. There’s no need to make a decision just yet. But thinking about the possibilities can help you learn more about yourself and what excites you.

Junior Journalists, we want to know: What's your dream job? Think about what you’re good at and what you enjoy doing. What career feels right? Is your dream job one that already exists, or is it one that no one else has thought of yet? Write about it, draw it, or interview someone who has the job you want. I want to be an author. I’m good at writing, and I make long, really interesting stories. I’m currently writing one about twins—a girl and boy—who are different from their friends. I think up a story in my head. I also get inspiration from other things. One of my ideas came from a school project. I write stories for my blog, but I haven’t posted any yet. Hopefully, I can read them aloud to kids and inspire them. I’ve known I wanted to be an author since third grade. When we have indoor recess, I like to write stories because it is super fun to do and they usually come easily to me. Dahlia L., 11, North Carolina

My dream job is to play in the NBA. I think this is a good job for me because I’d be doing something I love for money. I would have to practice for a few years, but I believe in myself. I can do it. Austin M., 10, Florida

When I grow up, I’d like to be an author. I’ve already started to write short stories, and I really like it. An author needs to know how to write, how to read, and maybe how to draw. You have to write titles, words, sentences, and paragraphs. Although I’m still learning, I can write simple stories on one whole page. In my school, we’re practicing writing poems. I enjoy it. I’m planning to be a poet. I love to read books, mostly fictional stories and comic books. But I still like to read nonfiction and poetry books. When I grow up, I want to be an artist. I like to draw realistic pictures of cities and lots of other things. I’d have my own art studio. I dreamed of being an artist when I was little. And I drew so many pictures, I filled up my room! Ariele D., 10 North Carolina

My dream job is to be a scientist. I am good at math, and I enjoy solving problems and being outside. I want to do research in Antarctica. I want to learn more about how to solve the global warming problem. I want to make the world a better place for future generations, wildlife, forests, and ocean life.
