The Statue of Liberty is an American icon. At 305 feet tall, she stands as a symbol of freedom and democracy. She welcomes Americans, immigrants, and visitors from her perch in New York Harbor. But what does she stand for? In his new picture book, Her Right Foot, author DAVE EGGERS takes a close look at Lady Liberty’s foundation. The idea came to him in 2015, while he was visiting the Statue of Liberty with his family. “The Statue of Liberty’s position of action and welcome—striding into the sea to meet new arrivals—struck me as crucial to remember,” Eggers says in a press release. He hopes his book will give kids historic and current context about what America stands for: “The symbol of America is a symbol of welcome.”
