SCOTT KELLY—NASA; JILL TATARA FOR TIME FOR KIDS (INSET)

Astronaut SCOTT KELLY spent a year aboard the International Space Station without gravity, fresh air, or family. He endured physical and mental challenges to help scientists study the health impacts of long-term space travel.

In his new book, My Journey to the Stars, Kelly gives readers an inside look at his life, from early childhood (he could never sit still) to returning to Earth after his long mission (he could barely stand up). Kelly began writing the kids’ book while also working on Endurance, an adult memoir about his journey. “A lot of kids need something that motivates them,” Kelly told TFK. “For me, it was a book.” Kelly says that reading changed his life. “I hope this book can do for some kids what [books] did for me.”
