My Visit to the White House

In February, TFK Kid Reporter Audrey Owolo conducted an exclusive interview with Doug Emhoff, Second Gentleman of the United States. Here, Audrey recounts her experience.

I was invited to a White House event announcing the results of the White House Challenge to End Hunger and Build Healthy Communities. While there, I had a chance to interview Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff.

I started my visit by checking in at the Eisenhower Executive Office Building. That’s where the offices of the vice president and the Second Gentleman are located.

The event was an opportunity for organizations that partnered with the White House to talk about their work fighting hunger and promoting healthy food choices. The Second Gentleman was at the exhibition program along with other important people, including Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack, chef José Andrés, and basketball player Elena Delle Donne.

The Second Gentleman thanked all of the community partners and spoke about the White House’s commitment to fighting hunger and reducing diet-related diseases. After the event, it was time for my interview.

I met the Second Gentleman in his office. He had a lot of important things to say about combating hunger and promoting healthy eating, including how kids can get involved. He then showed me his balcony and the views of the White House. We took a picture together, and I thanked him for meeting with me.

After the interview, another surprise was in store: a tour of the White House Press Room. On the way, I saw the press waiting for a meeting to finish between the president and members of Congress.

My visit to the White House was an experience that I will remember for the rest of my life.
