Education Order

On March 20, President Donald Trump signed an executive order. It aims to dismantle the Department of Education (DOE). Trump has said that the department will keep some “core necessities.” He has also said that Congress will vote on whether to officially abolish it.
The order is one of many signed during the first weeks of Trump’s term. He’s working to make the federal government smaller through major cuts and funding freezes.
The DOE was started by Congress in 1979. Its tasks have varied. One is the management of federal student loans and aid programs. It has also provided some public education funding. And it has collected school data. According to the executive order, the department’s “main functions” will be given to “states and local communities.”
The DOE had about 4,200 employees in September 2024. That’s according to the Office of Personnel Management. On March 11, news came that 50% of DOE employees would be laid off.
