Bye-Bye, Red Dye
On January 15, U.S. regulators banned one type of red dye, Red No. 3, from foods. This dye was already banned from cosmetics. But that ban wasn’t extended to foods. Now, 35 years later, it is.
In 2022, health advocates petitioned the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). They pointed to studies that showed that the dye caused health problems in rats. This may not be true for people. But the FDA will have manufacturers remove the dye from foods. They have until January 2027 to do so.
