Britain’s royal family has a new member. Prince William and Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge, welcomed their third child on April 23. The couple presented the baby to photographers just seven hours after his birth. Prince William said they were “very happy.” Then he joked, “Thrice the worry now.” Their firstborn, Prince George, is 4. Princess Charlotte is 2.
The newborn is fifth in line to the British throne after his grandfather, father, brother, and sister. His birth is a milestone for the British royal family. For the first time, a royal son will not replace his older sister in the line of succession. That’s because British law changed in 2013 to allow birth order, rather than gender, to determine who would take the throne. At press time, the royal baby had yet to be named.
