What happens before a book appears on a shelf? Barefoot Books is a children’s book publisher. TFK Kid Reporter Abhijay Potluri visited its office in 2024. He talked to three teams. Here’s what he learned about the role each plays in making books.
The Editorial Team

Bookmaking starts with the editorial team. This team makes sure the story is the best it can be. The job starts with a manuscript. This is a draft from the author. Editors go through it. They make changes. Some editors focus on characters and plot. Others focus on grammar and spelling.
The Design Team

The design team is responsible for how the book looks. It receives a story from the editors. It chooses fonts and colors. Its choices match the book’s mood or theme. Designers add an illustrator’s images. They pay close attention to detail. The goal is a book that appeals to readers.
The Marketing Team
The marketing team (above) helps people find out about new books. It organizes book signings with authors. It gets reviews from popular websites. This team works closely with designers. Together, they come up with advertisements. Marketing uses social media to reach readers.
