Electronic devices can be used for nearly anything. People can watch videos on a phone. They can search for new music on a tablet. But too much mindless use can be bad. It can lead to “brain rot.” The term is the Oxford University Press Word of the Year for 2024.

The publisher announced its choice in December. Brain rot is said to happen when someone looks at too much unimportant content online. It’s one of the possible “dangers of virtual life,” Casper Grathwohl says. He’s president of Oxford Languages.
