Soccer star Lionel Messi was TIME’s Athlete of the Year. The World Cup champion made headlines in 2023. His contract ended with Paris Saint-Germain. Messi had to decide which team to play for next. His choice was Inter Miami. It shocked the world. But his presence was good for American soccer. Attendance and viewership soared.
Sam Altman was CEO of the year. He runs the company OpenAI. It released the artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot ChatGPT. As Altman told TIME, 2023 was the year people “started taking AI seriously.”
