Do You Know These Heroes?

The American Women Quarters Program is a four-year program. It started in 2022. It ends this year. Below are the 2025 quarters. Read about each notable woman. Which one inspires you most?
Althea Gibson (above) was a tennis player. She was the first Black tennis player to win the U.S. Open. She was also the first Black player to win a championship at Wimbledon. That’s a tennis tournament in England. Gibson won both titles in 1957. In 1971, she was inducted to the International Tennis Hall of Fame.

Juliette Gordon Low founded the Girl Scouts of the USA. Low started it with just one troop of girls. That was in Savannah, Georgia, her hometown. Today, the organization has about 2.5 million members. That includes more than a million girls and 750,000 adults. It’s the largest organization in the world for girls.

Vera Rubin was an astronomer in the 1960s. She studied space. There were not many female astronomers then. She was interested in how galaxies work. A galaxy is a cluster of stars, planets, gas, and dust. Earth is in the Milky Way galaxy. Rubin studied our galaxy and others.

Stacey Park Milbern wanted a more inclusive world. She wanted this especially for people with disabilities. She was born with one. It’s called congenital muscular dystrophy. Milbern helped start the Disability Justice Culture Club. The group got health kits to people to prevent COVID-19.

Ida B. Wells was a journalist and activist. She was born enslaved in 1862. Her family got its freedom when she was a baby. As an adult, Wells fought for civil rights for Black Americans. She also fought for women’s rights. She wanted all women to have the right to vote.
