The first New York City marathon took place in 1970. It was hosted by New York Road Runners (NYRR). Only 127 runners entered the 26.2-mile race. Now it’s the world’s largest marathon. It’s held on the first Sunday in November. More than 55,000 people finished the run in 2024.

A Growing Marathon

The New York City Marathon has been run for 54 years. It’s still hosted by NYRR. The race has been canceled only twice: in 2012, following Hurricane Sandy, and again in 2020, because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

For the Kids

Kids can get involved with NYRR too. Rising New York Road Runners is a youth fitness platform. It has resources for communities in New York City and beyond. The goal is to help kids build confidence through physical activity. Not a runner? That’s okay. It has fitness activities anyone can join in on.
