The Challenge: Speedy Suit

Swimmer Michael Phelps says the Speedo LZR (lay-zer) Racer swimsuit makes him feel "like a rocket." It's no wonder. Rocket scientists at NASA helped create the suit.

They studied swimmers. Muscle and water movement can slow a swimmer. So can a soggy swimsuit or even a thread on a suit.

The LZR is not sewn together like other swimsuits. It fits like a second skin. The tight fit helps hold a racer's body in the right position. The suit's fabric forms a barrier between water and skin. Swimmers use less energy to glide through the pool.

Did the LZR help Phelps? He won eight gold medals at the Olympics! That's more than any athlete ever. "I know I have the best suit on," he said.
